Gang Prevention & Intervention Resources
The Latino Coalition specializes in programs that address the needs of high-risk and adjudicated youth. Through our “Equal Sides Everywhere (ESE)” project, funded by a $978,551 million grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Service/Administration for Children and Families, we have helped to develop grassroots gang-prevention and intervention programs in many of the communities we serve.
In the course of doing this work, we have also collected useful data pertaining to gang prevention and intervention strategies. In addition, we have held public forums on the topic, including several presentations at our First Annual Transforming Communities Conference, February 5-7, 2007.
Executive Director Richard Ramos’s opening-night address at that conference, “A Leadership Vision for Gang Prevention and Faith-Based Civic Engagement,” was broadcast nationally over C-SPAN radio. Audio may be downloaded here.
Audio of a panel discussion at the conference, “New Perspectives on Gang Prevention and Intervention,” will be downloadable momentarily. Panelists include Donny Gomez, trainer and job developer with the Aztecs Rising project of the LA Bridges II gang intervention program; the Honorable Carmen L. Lopez, Judge of the Connecticut Superior Court; Frank M. Puchi, Coordinator of the Future Teacher Diversity Corps at Palomar College; and Matt Sanchez, founder of Hoods in the Woods, a widely-heralded gang prevention and intervention program that brings rival gang members together through camping trips and mentoring.
